Edgar Degas. 07.19.1834. – 09.27.1917.

“You must aim high, not in what you are going to do at some future date, but in what you are going to make yourself do to-day. Otherwise, working is just a waste of time.”  Edgar Degas

Do you like Degas’ art?  I love impressionism.  It’s so beautiful.

Today is his birthday.  Another of his quotes that I love is “I should like to be famous and unknown.” ~ Edgar Degas

I like this one a lot, but mine would be “I should like to be rich and unknown.”  Tracie

Don’t you think that would be lovely?  I definitely don’t want to be famous.  But rich.  Oh yes, I’ll take it.

5 Things You MUST Have in New York on Vacation

Note:  As always if you see something you like, click on the photos and it will take you to like items.   This post may contain affiliate links.  Check out what that means to you here.

These are the five things that I believe that you absolutely need to have with you no matter where you are on vacation.  They are especially essential in New York.  See if you agree with what made my top five list.

Number 1:  A good camera strap.

To carry that heavy camera around.  I love the one above.  It’s beautiful and functional, both requirements in my book.

Funny story.  I decided that I didn’t need to take my camera strap with me to New York.  Apparently I had a brain lapse.  Believe me, you need a camera strap.  That camera will get very, very heavy after a few hours.  I finally resorted to using my purse strap as a camera strap.  It worked in a pinch, but I don’t recommend a narrow strap like that.

Do yourself a favor, and buy yourself a lovely strap that you will want to use.

I also love all of these.

You can find more here and here.

Number 2:  A small wristlet purse.

To keep petty cash, metro cards, snacks – nuts, hard candies, a candy bar – your insurance card, identification, etc.  All things you need to have on you.  Like candy bars.
I started out carrying my cross body purse and that lasted exactly one day.   Something that you don’t think twice about carting from the car to the store becomes extremely heavy after a few hours.  I was so glad I had my wristlet with me.
One of the best tips I read about before we left was to never place your purse on the back of your chair.  That’s an excellent way to easily be robbed.  Carrying my wristlet solved this problem, because I just laid it beside my plate or in my lap whenever we stopped for a meal.  It was always in plain sight.  With the added benefit of being light and easy to carry.
You can find more here.

Number 3:  Water, water, water
You will not believe how much water you will consume.  Even Hayden, who used to avoid water like it had the plague in it, drank gallons.  Being a tourist is thirsty work.  Take a bottle with you everywhere.

Number 4:  Good walking shoes.
You will walk and walk and walk and walk some more.   And just when you think that you can’t go another foot, you will walk a few more miles.  This has to be why people in New York are so fit.  All they do is walk!
You can find more here.

Number 5:  Sunscreen.
You are definitely going to need it.  We were in New York the first week of June and we had perfect weather.  Perfect in my opinion.  High’s in the 60’s with lots of cloud cover.  Hoodie weather.  Not most people’s ideal, but mine for sure.  We still needed sunscreen.
So what makes your top five list for vacation?  How does it compare to mine?

What I’m Reading Right Now. 07.14.17

I must have a book at hand to be able to function.  Or a magazine.  Or a shampoo bottle.  Words are nourishment for my mind and are essential to my well-being.  In this space each week I’ll tell you what I’m reading and you can tell me what you’re reading and we’ll all be happy!

FICTION

Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore

I was disappointed in this book, along with Fire.  I loved Graceling and I felt like neither of the follow-up books were up to par.  Sigh.

NON-FICTION

Simplify Your Work Life by Elaine St. James

This was an excellent, quick read.

COOKBOOKS

The Cook’s Book of Intense Flavors by Robert and Molly Krause

This is a beautiful and lovely cookbook.  I love it when the pages make me happy.

MAGAZINES

My magazines.  You know my love of a real magazine.  Right now, Good Housekeeping, Better Homes and Gardens, Eating Well, and more are on sale!

All of this is what was on my nightstand this past week.  What have you been reading?

All the Things. 07.01.17

As you can see from the date of this post, it should have come out the weekend of July 1st.  Oh well, if I had everything together I would have to change the title of my blog, wouldn’t I?

Here’s what I found that weekend.  There are some awesome finds!

This has to be my best find in a loooong time!  A hand crocheted tablecloth for $1.00!  It has some stains and one quarter sized hole in it but those things can be remedied.

I love buying my picture frames at yard sales and thrift stores.  This is going to showcase our New York photos splendidly.  $1.00

So will this one.  It’s 11 X 14 inside the mat.  $1.99.

I also buy Christmas presents at yard sales and thrift stores.  Do you?  No one in my family has complained yet.  $5.99.

Another addition to Liva’s Christmas Village.  $2.59.  Sweet, it’s still in it’s original box.My Mama and I have a theory about shopping at yard sales and thrift stores.  If you look long enough for something that you want, you will eventually find it for a fantastic price.  This Ball Utensil Set has been on my mental to buy list for a while.  Yes, this is something that I could definitely buy and not break the bank, and I would have if I had needed it.  But, I didn’t and the happy score is half the fun!  $0.99.

My Mama loves photo albums that are not photo albums.  $1.99.

Another Christmas present, maybe?  $1.99.

Liva and her owls.  She loved this one.  It had something sweet smelling inside.  No worries though it came out sparkly and new from the dishwasher.  $0.99.

All in all I spent $18.53.  Not bad at all for quite a few Christmas presents and my lovely, lovely new vintage tablecloth.  Woo-hoo!

Did you find anything awesome in your wanderings?
