Why I LOVE Yard Sales!! June 1, 2016

I LOVE yard sales, people!!!  They are the best place to furnish your house, find Christmas presents, find things to sell online, the list can go on and on.  I have done all of these and more and will do it again in the future.

Here’s what treasure’s I found last weekend before last with my Mama.

When my Mother and I got out of the car the lady that was having this yard sale started shouting immediately that everything was half off.  Then she said “Never mind, just make an offer, everything has to go NOW.”  I love yard sales like this.  Here’s what I found.

TIKI table top glass torches

I bought these for $0.50.  For BOTH.  Yes, I know the link says there should be three, but I’m not going to complain when I paid 50 cents for two that still had the oil in them.  I took them straight home and put them on my patio table on the deck and love them!

Snow shovel for $0.50, because everyone needs to buy their snow shovels in June.

I saw this thing and asked her what it was and she said that basically it was a perpetual ice pack for your knees.  She had $20.00 dollars on it and said that she paid almost $200.00 and told me to take it for $5.00.  Sold!  I don’t know if I’ll sell it or keep it.

My Mother bought 4 green depression glass King’s Crown goblets for $0.25 for all four and I had the sandwich plates and coffee cups to match it at my house.  Score!

TIFFIN GLASS (SET OF 4) Goblets Green Depression Glass -- KINGS CROWN THUMBPRINT

VINTAGE GREEN DEPRESSION GLASS PLATE CUP TIFFIN THUMBPRINT DESIGN, MATCHING SET

My mama also bought this for $0.25.

We had bought one for Hayden a few years ago for Christmas and when my nephew came for the summer he loved it, so my Mama got it for him.

That’s all that I can remember off the top of my head.  I’ll try to do better about taking picture for you as I shop!

Happy hunting!

Jewelry and Makeup Armoire.

Last summer I found two of these Mirrotek Jewelry and Makeup Armoire’s on one of my thrift store jaunts.  Last Summer.  I just now put them up in mine and my daughter’s rooms.  sigh.

But, enough about my procrastination habits.  These things are awesome.

Of course mine didn’t come with installation instructions, most of the things I find out and about never do.  But it had these weird arm things that go over the top of a door.  I immediately took those off.  I knew with Liv and myself that it would never stay up on the door with just those things.  We had a reason to call her Destructo Girl when she was little. Poor little thing, she is her mother’s daughter.  And things that would hang beautifully on other people’s doors and never fly off because of someone slamming a door – well – those things had to come off.

You can see that the back of the armoire has two holes in it, up high near the top.  This is where my father’s ingenuity comes into play.  I absorbed his ingenuity through osmosis.

I went out to the garage and grabbed a couple of these.

Drywall anchors people.  It’s what people like me and my daughter need in our lives.

IMG_0292IMG_0293

I sank them into the wall at the height that I wanted to hang the armoire and then I sank a couple of screws into them.  Not all the way.  I wanted the screws to stick out slightly to hang the armoire on.

Next, hang up the armoire!  Tada!  It’s not crooked on the wall.  Promise, just my non-skills with my camera.

I love these things.  I transferred the jewelry that I have collected over the years into it and stuffed those jewelry boxes into the donation pile.  Yay for not having things on my dresser.

I love the clean look of it and that’s one less thing on the dresser to call to other random things to come and join it.  Does this happen at your house?  If something sits out on my flat surfaces, other things join it until you can’t tell what your dresser looks like?  Maybe it’s just me.

What do you think?  I hope you find one at a yard sale!

Thrifty Treasures. Week 50 of 53.

Woo-hoo!  This is already a great week for thrifting.  That is totally a word people, but spell checker keeps telling me it’s not.  But it is!  Let’s get to the awesome deals I have found this week.

Philosophy Lemon Custard Shampoo and Bubble Bath $2.99

1211151215

Yee-haw!  I couldn’t believe it when I found this on the shelf.  It is the 32 oz. bottle and it was unopened for $2.99!  Yes, please!  I would love to find this every day.

Iron Lamps $3.99 each

1211150955

My poor hubby has been living with my yellow lamps like these for the past 7 years.  I found these beauties and thought that they would look a lot better in his man cave than those (even though he could care less!)

Cast Iron Dutch Oven $10.99

1211151110

Don’t you just love it when people replace all their kitchen wares and there is nothing wrong with the stuff they are getting rid of?  I found this little lovely Thursday and brought her home to live with her best friend the red one I got a few years ago.

The Eiffel Tower Table Clock $3.99

1211150951

I love this clock!  Isn’t it awesome!

Vintage Pyrex Red Clear Bottom Glass Mixing Bowl $0.99

1211151047

And this people is why my blog is named Somewhat Awry.  Look at my poor, sad shattered into a gazillion pieces bowl.

As I was getting out of my car, I dropped the bag and pulverized this beauty.  I actually got tears in my eyes.  Red is my favorite color and you don’t find many vintage pieces like this one ~for 99 cents!!!~ and now it is gone forever.  sigh.

That is what I scored this week, what lovelies did you find?

Thrifty Treasures. Week 47 of 53

Some weeks are much better than others when it comes to finding treasure’s at yard sales or thrift stores.

This was a good week!  Look at what I found that I must not be able to live without.

This is a photograph that someone took while in France that they had transferred to a canvas and stretched.  I ab.so.lute.ly looooove this!  I hung it over my bed and I can’t stop looking at it, even when my eyes are closed it makes me happy because I know that it’s there.  $4.99 Best. deal. ever.

1117150813a

This coffee machine.   MMMMHHHHH.  I hated our regular coffee pot.  Every single time I would make even a half pot, I would forget that there was a small bit of coffee in it until it looked like a science experiment.  Yuck.  But, this thing is amazing.  Need one cup of coffee.  Ta-da!  Need six cups. Ta-da!  And it never leaves coffee to turn weird colors and textures!  $3.99 Yay!

This amazing All-Clad Belgium Waffle maker.  Oh people, I love this thing!  It makes the best waffles, ever.  Denton and I were at a road side yard sell early this fall and I picked this baby up for $7.00.  Whaaaaat?!?  Seriously, this is a $200 waffle maker and the lady just wanted it gone.  Yes, Please!

All Clad 4 Slice Belgian Waffle Maker 2100046968

An adjustable goose neck brass lamp.  I usually bring home any type of cool lamps that are brass and immediately paint them with spray paint.  I don’t think that I’m going to do that with this little lovely.  Isn’t she pretty!  The brass is such a soft color on this one and I love it.  $2.99, woo-hoo!

What have you found this week?

Weird Sightings. Chris and Megan picture frame.

I was in one of my local haunts a couple of weeks ago and saw this.

Here is an up close shot of the saying.

IMG_0636

Now what I want to know is this.  If it was such a privilege to meet one another, why oh why is this in a thrift store?  And what are the odds that another Chris and Megan are going to stumble upon this and buy it?

I actually found this quite depressing for the former Chris and Megan.  It was obviously custom made and yet for some reason it wasn’t deemed worthy of holding onto anymore.

Does this make anyone else sad for them?

I LOVE yard sales, and estate sales and thrift stores.  Don’t you?  You never know what type of treasure you’re going to find!

My mother has longed for the picture above for YEARS.  It was a hostess gift from Home Interiors way back in the eighties? nineties? and you couldn’t buy it.  You had to have a party and sell so much stuff to get it.

I always say that if you look long enough you will find what you are actually looking for and here it is!  I walked into my local Goodwill store last week and there it was in all of its glory.  I immediately snatched it and wrestled it into my buggy* (note to anyone who doesn’t shop at yard sales, or thrift stores – if you see something you are on the fence about, i.e. you are not sure you want it, PUT IT IN YOUR BUGGY ANYWAY!  If you don’t it will definitely be gone when you go back!) after taking a quick picture to send to my Mama.  I didn’t even have to say anything in addition to the photo.  I instantly got a response back – YES!!!! How much is it?!?!

No need to worry about the price, dear Mother.  It’s your birthday present!

If you are like me you want to know the price though.  I paid a whopping $20.95 for it and it was worth every. single. penny.

Don’t you love it when you find something you’ve waited so long for?

* By the way, in case you are not from the lovely south, a buggy is a grocery cart in my part of the world.
