Wind River.  Have you seen it?  When we went home for Thanksgiving/Christmas my Daddy told me about this movie, we actually watched one of the trailers for it.  And then with all of the excitement of being home and then the travel and then trying to get back into our normal routine…..I forgot about it.

Last weekend we were trying to pick a movie from the multitude of ones we haven’t seen yet and this one came up in our list.

You guys.  This movie is exceptional.  Truly.  You have to see it.  It’s very hard to watch at times, and I don’t say that to discourage you from watching it, just be aware that this isn’t something you are going to want to watch with your kids around.

The actors are ALL amazing.  The music is haunting.  The scenery is stunning and riveting.  But the story that they tell, and tell it so, so well is unforgettable.

If you are looking for a superb mystery, I can’t think of anything you’ll want to watch more.

So, put the kids to bed and prepare to see an excellent movie tonight.

Have you seen The Lord of the Rings?   The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.  If you haven’t, you have no idea what you are missing.

For the last three weekends we watched the entire thing, again.  It IS a serious time commitment – almost 9 and half hours worth – but it is infinitely worth it.

What can I tell you about these films that would make you want to watch them without giving anything away?

1.  The score.  Seriously.  It is stupendous.  Right off the top of my head I can’t think of one to rival it.  Even if for some insane reason you don’t want to watch the trilogy, you must listen to the score!

2.  The cast is outstanding.  Can I pick a favorite?  Would it be Elijah Wood?  Ian McKellen?  Sean Astin?  Or Andy Serkis??   On and on and on.   I really don’t think that I can.  They are all so, so, so good.

3.  The filming is so phenomenal, you’ll want to go live in Middle-earth just like me, or New Zealand if you want to be technical about it.  There is some serious, serious beauty in that place on our planet earth.

Note:  For all of the J. R. R. Tolkien fans, yes the movies deviate from the books.  Is any movie ever as good as the book?  That would be a resounding NO in my opinion.  But, but!  You have to take them each for what they are.  And these movies are very much worth the time you will spend with them.  Then you can go read the books!

Now, clear your schedule, and get ready for an incredible and marvelous adventure.  You can rent them here, or buy them for your collection here!  Just go watch them.  You can thank me later.

Logan.

2017 | R | Amazon | Director: James Mangold

Starring:Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart

Runtime: 2 hours, 17 minutes

Have you seen Logan yet?  We watched it earlier this fall and I have to say, I think this is my very favorite Wolverine movie.  No, it IS my favorite Wolverine movie.  As always, I never want to give away any of the details….It’s a beautiful movie, I know that sounds weird because we are talking about an X-men movie, but it’s true.  I loved it.  There is so much about this movie that makes me want to recommend it to you – but I can’t tell you what any of them are!

The acting is top shelf.  Patrick Stewart as always is amazing, Hugh Jackman is incredible and the rest of the cast is superb too.

One of the best lines in the movie is:  Don’t be what they made you.

I won’t tell you who said it, but really, go get this movie.

Caveat:  This movie is rated R.  It’s rated R for many, many, many reasons!  You are definitely not going to want your 11 year old to see it.  Sadly, she or he will have to wait until you want them to hear the F-word about 50 times in one movie.  It’s also bloody and gory which none of the other X-men movies were to this extent.  Just keep that in mind!

Go watch a movie tonight!  Preferably in your own home theater, where people don’t run across the room and block the screen, crinkle POTATO chip bags, laugh at inappropriate moments and just altogether ruin the movie going experience.  All of these things have happened to me at the theater.  Sigh.

Wonder Woman

Starring: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright
Runtime: 2 hours, 21 minutes

Wonder Woman.  Have you seen it?  We watched it this past week and I have to say it is hands down my favorite super hero movie of all time.  I love super hero movies.  Everything about it was amazing.  The actors, the filming, the plot, everything.

I don’t want to give anything away in case you are like me and you wait, and wait, and wait to see something, but you need to quickly go rent/buy this and watch it!  You can thank me later.

I give it all the high fives, all the thumbs up and all the stars!

Happy Birthday Dr. No!

1962 | PG | Amazon | Directed by: Terrence Young

Are you a James Bond fan?  Today, October 5, is the day that the very first Bond film was released in 1962.  Dr. No starring Sean Connery.  55 years.  Can you believe that?

I absolutely love the Bond films.  What’s not to love?  The locations are always beautiful.  The cast is just as lovely.  Fight scenes, chase scenes, secret agents, the guy always gets the girl.  An excellent way to spend a couple of hours, in my opinion.

Time to make my family watch a bond film this weekend!  They will indulge me because I think they’re fun.  And secretly they love them too.  I’m sure of it.

The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien

I think it’s time for a marathon of reading and movies!  Thank you so much J. R. R. Tolkien for opening our imaginations to this fantastical world.

War for the Planet of the Apes.

2017 | PG-13 | In Theaters Now | Director: Matt Reeves

Note: This post may contain affiliate links. Check out what that means to you here.

My niece and nephew were with us last week and that’s always a little like vacation. Vacation seems to be the only time we go to the movie theater.

This was the consensus movie this time. War for the Planet of the Apes. This trilogy has been the best in my humble opinion. We caught ourselves up and watched Dawn of the Planet of the Apes last night in preparation of seeing the new movie. Everyone had already seen Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

The CGI in this set of movies is amazing.  I love them.  I will say this:  I thought that the story line of the third movie was not as good as the first two.  It is still an excellent movie, just for the visuals alone, but I thought that it should have been tightened up a bit.

If you haven’t seen any of these movies, I HIGHLY recommend them.  Go watch a movie tonight!  Preferably in your own home theater, where people don’t run across the room and block the screen, crinkle POTATO chip bags, laugh at inappropriate moments and just altogether ruin the movie going experience.  All of these things have happened to me.  Sigh.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

1986 | PG-13 | DVD and BluRay | Director:  John Hughes

Isn’t it funny how things that once took up so much space and time in our lives are forgotten?

When I was fifteen, I was offered a summer job to watch a demon little boy everyday.  This is what paid for my first car – a lovely 1984 Ford Escort, black with louvers on the back hatch.  It was awesome.

The year was 1988 and the demon boy was 2 1/2 and all he wanted to do was watch movies.  And movies he had.  But every single day he wanted to watch the same thing over and over.  Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

In my defense I had asked if there was anything off limits for him in the movie section and was told that it was fine.  I mean, there were other adult looking movies in the mix, like Smokey and the Bandit, The Karate Kid and Greystoke which I loved by the way!  So I don’t know if he snuck this movie into the living room selection or what, but it wasn’t until almost the end of the next summer when his Daddy came home one day and almost had a coronary.  By this time, I would estimate that he had seen this movie at least 163 times.  Oops.

I love this movie.  It is a classic.  It takes me back to those lovely summers.  You must see it, no matter what Denton says.  His opinion doesn’t count when it comes to Bueller… Bueller… Bueller.

Amazing facts about this movie:

  • The two actors who played Bueller’s parents got married in real life after making the movie.
  • John Hughes wrote the script in 6 days.
  • The Ferrari wasn’t real.  It was a fake made from fiberglass and they used three of them.
  • None of Ben Stein’s lines in the movie were scripted except for roll call.
  • Alan Ruck – who played Cameron- was 29 years old!

Manchester By the Sea.

Manchester By The Sea [Blu-ray + DVD + Digital]

Okay.  I resisted seeing this movie.  It was on Hayden’s must see list though, so I buckled down and watched it with him and Denton.

I’m not going to lie.  It is a hard movie to watch at times, but it is so, so, so good.

I don’t believe that I have ever watched a movie that portrays people as stunningly real as this movie does.  It’s raw, and gritty and will make you cry and laugh, sometimes at the same time.

The actors are amazing in their roles.  Truly.

I definitely think you should go watch it this weekend.  Make sure you have your tissue box handy.

Caveat:  Rated R

  • Language
  • Sexual Content
  • Adult Themes

We watch most of our movies on Vudu, Netflix, or Amazon, because I have an aversion to putting on real clothes to go out in public to rent one from the Redbox.

Deadpool.

Deadpool.  Have you seen it?  Do you even like superhero movies?

In case you live under a rock, like I occasionally do, I am including a WARNING from the get-go.  This movie is rated R.  A very strongly rated R.

Here in our area the local morning show on the radio had a caller to say that her father had taken her 8-year-old to see the new Dealpool movie when it came out.  She said he (the eight year old) was absolutely thrilled and talked nonstop for the next week about how great the movie was.  She and her husband went the next weekend to see the movie and she said “I almost died!!!”

I can imagine her horror.

With that being said, this I think is one of my favorite Marvel movies.  It’s hilarious, zany, action packed, and fun.  Ryan Reynolds is amazing in this movie.

If you haven’t seen it and you’re not 12!!, go watch it and let me know if you like it too.
