Quote of the Week: Robin Williams

Why do they call it rush hour when nothing moves? Robin Williams“Why do they call it rush hour when nothing moves?”
Robin Williams

Things I didn’t know about Robin Williams:

  • In 1973 he was accepted into Julliard – only 20 people were accepted that year.  He was also one of two people who were accepted by John Houseman into the Advanced Program.  The other person was Christopher Reeve.
  • He and Christopher Reeve were close friends until Reeve’s death in 2004.  Robin Williams paid many of Reeve’s medical bills.
  • He had Lewy body dementia.  I had no idea.Robin Williams: Comic Genius Deluxe SetRobin Williams - When the Laughter Stops 1951-2014 by [Herbert, Emily]Robin Williams hbo weapons of self destruction

Quote of the Week: Phyllis Diller

Housework can't kill you, but why take a chance? Phyllis Diller“Housework can’t kill you, but why take a chance?”
Phyllis Diller

Some things I found fascinating about Phyllis Diller:

  • Her cigarette holder held a wooden cigarette because she didn’t smoke.
  • She was 37 years old when she first tried stand up in 1955.
  • She played with many symphony orchestras under the stage name Dame Illya Dillya as a piano soloist.  A review of one of her concerts in The San Francisco Examiner called her “a fine concert pianist with a firm touch.”

Apples to Apples Games

This summer while we were on vacation we played a LOT of games.  One of my favorites was this card game that my Mama found on one of her thrifting hunts.  This game is AWESOME and I highly recommend it!  If you can’t find one at a yard sale or thrift store (I’ve been looking since June when we got home from vacation and still haven’t found one) Amazon just dropped the price on theirs to $9.00 with free shipping if you have Prime.  If you don’t have Amazon Prime you can sign up to get a free trial with free 2-day shipping here.

I’m going to add this one to my cart and force ask my people nicely to play it with me!  You know that after I order this I’ll find three next week.  🙂

Quote of the Week: William Penn

Time is what we want most, but what we use worst. Willima Penn“Time is what we want most, but what we use worst.”
William Penn

Here are some things that might interest you about William Penn:

  • Did you know that King George II gave Pennsylvania and Delaware to William Penn to pay off debts he owed to his father?
  • Penn immediately set sail for America, landed in what is now Delaware and then proceeded to found Philadelphia.
  • He was imprisoned several times in the Tower of London (where he wrote No Cross, No Crown), which may have given him the impetus to take that trans-Atlantic journey.

Quote of the Week: Calvin and Hobbes

Calvin and Hobbes

“Sometimes when I’m talking, my words can’t keep up with my thoughts. I wonder why we think faster than we speak. Probably so we can think twice.”  Calvin and Hobbes

The Complete Calvin and Hobbes

Calvin and Hobbes was one of my favorite of all time comic strips.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I have just changed your life.  Or at least the next few weeks of it, while you lock yourself in your favorite room that is quiet, where you can devour all ten years worth of this lovely, lovely thing.

Every time I find one of these iconic books, I buy it for Hayden.  He just smiles and puts it with his collection.  But I know the truth.  He is secretly devouring them when I’m not looking.

I love them, I hope you do too!

Quote of the Week: Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump

“I’m not a smart man, but I know what love is.”  Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump was released in the United States on July 6, 1994.  1994!  It seems like yesterday to me.  Does this mean I’m old?  It won Tom Hanks his second Oscar.  Deservedly so, Mr. Hanks.

There are so, so many quotes from this movie that I could have focused on, but I think this one sums Forrest up completely. 💗

Did you know that Forrest Gump was based on a novel by Winston Groom?  I didn’t.  I may need to add this to my gargantuan pile of books that need to be read…..

Book Haul! April 2019

One of the best things, in my opinion, about yard sales and thrift stores are the books.  We love books at our house and we buy a LOT of them throughout the year.  But, I don’t want to go broke; ergo, yard sales and thrift stores.

If you are worried that the authors are getting the shaft when you buy a used book, here is an excellent article about buying used versus new.  And yes, we still buy new books too.  Who doesn’t love stepping into a Barnes and Noble?  The smell alone draws me in, just like a library.
