There will as always, NOT be any type of actual spoilers.  Please don’t ruin it for anyone who hasn’t seen this show in the comments.  Please and thank you.  Here we go.

Derry Girls is a British teen sitcom created and written by Lisa McGee.  The series was inspired by McGee’s own experiences growing up in Derry, Northern Ireland, in the 1990s, during the final years of the Troubles.  It stars five teenagers living in mid-1990s Derry while attending Our Lady Immaculate College, a fictional girls’ Catholic secondary school based on the real-life Thornhill College, where McGee herself studied.  Derry Girls was filmed in Northern Ireland, with most scenes shot on location in Derry and some in Belfast.  via

Derry Girls

I LOVED this show.  Loved, loved, loved it.  Liv rarely asks us to watch TV with her, and when she does we make the time.

I’m not Catholic, I’m barely Irish according to my Ancestry DNA profile, and I did not attend an all girls high school.  But I cannot express how much I related to the girls in this show.  Example:  I just had a conversation with my brother about John Green.  I love his books, highly – highly recommend, HOWEVER, I just about can’t stand to read them.  He has a way of making you remember being fifteen years old that is very uncomfortable to me.  I do not ever want to be 15 years old again.  This show makes me feel all the feels from my teenage years in the same way.  I see myself in all of the characters and I think that was absolutely the point.

This show is first and foremost a comedy, but it is also honest with the time period so it is heartbreaking at moments too.  Some episodes I need to get to the next one immediately and other ones I have to take a break to go sit quietly and just cry for a while.

Also, if you watch it for no other reason, watch it for the music.  The music clinches it.  Did I mention that I LOVED this show?

This show streams on Netflix.  So, have you watched Derry Girls?  Let me know what you think!

TV Time: Away

TV Time:  Away.  Have you seen it?

Away follows the first crewed expedition to Mars, the Mars Joint Initiative. It features an international crew: a Chinese chemist, a world-leading British botanist with no previous experience in space, a Russian cosmonaut with the most experience in space, an Indian medical officer who is second in command, and American commander Emma Green. Emma’s husband trained as an astronaut along with her, and might have commanded the mission but for a medical condition.

The three-year mission launches from the Moon; however, several crew members do not trust Emma’s ability to command because of her response to a crisis situation at the very beginning of the mission.

The series is described as being “about hope, humanity and how ultimately, we need one another if we are to achieve impossible things.” via

Okay.  I have to be honest right up front about this show.  Yes you should definitely go watch it.  Sadly, Netflix has already cancelled it.  Yes.  I know.  Denton and I loved this show and to read that they cancelled it one month after they released it is super weird and maddening.  I’ve read many articles after we finished it to try and comprehend why on earth a streaming service would axe a show that stayed in the number one spot for weeks, and from what I’ve read it comes down to money.  It cost Netflix approximately $6 million dollars an episode to make it.

So I’ll add my plea to all others on the internet:  calling all streaming services, please pick up this absolute gem.  I’m ready and waiting to follow this show to your service!

Now that that’s out of the way, you should block out a weekend to binge this one.  I love Hilary Swank and she is amazing in this show, but I loved the other cast members more.  I won’t tell you my favorites so that I won’t spoil it for you, but I do have them……

Away' Canceled at Netflix After One Season; No Season 2 - What's on Netflix

You can watch it for free if you have Netflix.  So, have you watched Away?  Are you super ticked off that they have already cancelled it?  Did you love it as much as I did?  Let me know what you think!

TV Time: Schitt’s Creek

Schitt’s Creek.  Have you seen it?

Schitt’s Creek (stylized as Schitt$ Creek) is a Canadian television sitcom created by father and son Eugene and Dan Levy that aired on CBC Television from January 13, 2015, to April 7, 2020.  It consists of 80 episodes spread over six seasons.  Produced by Not a Real Company Productions and Anonymous Content, the series follows the formerly wealthy Rose family’s trials and tribulations. After Rose’s business manager embezzles the family business, Rose Video, the family loses its fortune and relocates to Schitt’s Creek, a small town they once purchased as a joke.  Now living in a motel, Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy) and Moira Rose (Catherine O’Hara)—along with their adult children, David (Dan Levy) and Alexis (Annie Murphy)—must adjust to life without money and with each other.  via

Okay.  I feel like I have a secret and I’m bursting to tell someone.  And I can keep a secret forever and not feel that.  So here it is, with all the squeals and wiggles that would accompany an announcement of this magnitude and all that it deserves.  WE LOVE THIS SHOW!  I’m not using that as a collective we either.  Denton and I finished the last episode last night and before the credits even started to roll he said:  “Let’s watch it again.  Right now.”

From the very first episode you are going to laugh out loud.  But you are also going to fall in love with the entire cast which is what is going to keep you watching until the very end.  They are stellar.  Absolutely stellar.

I could rhapsodize on and on about each one of them; why I love each character on the show, how they play off of one another and the rhythm that they have from the get go, but you should just go watch it for yourself.  They are magnificent and I cried when it ended because I wanted to keep watching to see what happens with them all next.  I can’t think of more telling praise.

Schitt's Creek

You can watch it for free if you have Netflix, but you can also watch it on Amazon.  So, have you watched Schitt’s Creek?  Did you love it as much as I did?  Let me know what you think!

Dexter.  Have you seen it?

Do you have a lot of time to kill?  Then I have the answer for you.  There are eight seasons of this show and you are going to go into hibernation mode once you start it.  This show is exceptional.

Dexter is an American crime drama mystery television series that aired on Showtime from October 1, 2006, to September 22, 2013.  Set in Miami, the series centers on Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a forensic technician specializing in bloodstain pattern analysis for the fictional Miami Metro Police Department, who leads a secret parallel life as a vigilante serial killer, hunting down murderers who have slipped through the cracks of the justice system.  via. Warning:  this link will take you to SPOILERS!

You may ask yourself, why in the world would I want to watch a show about a serial killer?  I was very hesitant to start this show myself.  I couldn’t get past the beginning of season 2 of the TV show Hannibal.  I have a great love for Mads Mikkelsen, and Hugh Dancy was AMAZING, but oh my word, I just couldn’t do it.  Dexter is very, very different.  Yes, there is blood and gore but it’s also funny and the relationships that play off of one another is done brilliantly.

I have to say, that in the last few seasons the show is not as stupendous as is in the first five seasons, however, that did not stop us from watching it.  You will be invested in the characters by that point, just like on A Game of Thrones.  Please don’t not watch this show because you know that the creators and writers are going to screw it up along the way.  Very few shows escape this tragedy, and you will be missing an absolutely incredible cast and story if you do.

Also, the first season of Dexter was adapted from the book Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay.  I have read that the books and the TV show diverge after the first season, but I actually have no idea.  I haven’t read the books, which is shocking, I know.

So, have you watched Dexter?  Did you love it?  Have you read the books?  Should I read them?  Have you heard that they are going to bring the show back at the end of 2021!?!  I’m very excited to see what they do with it.  Let me know what you think!

TV Time: Travelers

Travelers.  Have you seen it?

You by now know my love of science fiction; I blame it on how much Quantum Leap I watched as a teenager.

If you aren’t into SciFi, I would still highly recommend this show to you simply to watch the cast.  They are amazing.  The storylines of each of the characters is separate but intertwined in such a way that it hooked me from the very first episode.   We loved it.

Since I am not one to remake the wheel, I’ve put the premise below from Wikipedia:

Premise

In a post-apocalyptic future, thousands of special operatives are tasked with preventing the collapse of society. These operatives, known as “travelers”, have their consciousnesses sent back in time and transferred into the “host” body of present-day individuals who would otherwise be moments from death, to minimize unexpected impact on the time line. The transfer requires the exact location of the target, made possible by 21st century smartphones and GPS, providing time, elevation, latitude, and longitude (TELL) coordinates that are archived for use in the future.  via

I find shows like this fascinating.  Can you imagine being sent back in time into a persons body who was going to die and having to continue their life, also while trying to save the world?  It’s an excellent show, with an outstanding cast of characters.  You should check it out.

There are three seasons on Netflix.  Now your weekend is set!
